If you're unfamiliar with Jewish religious service traditions, here are a few requests:
Please turn off your cell phones, and please do not take photographs during the service.
Men are asked to wear a "kippah" or "yarmulke" - a skullcap - which you'll find at the entrance to the room. Women are also welcome to wear a kippah if they' like. Our Kippot were made specially in New York for Rebecca's Bat Mitzvah, combining the traditional red color of Chinese celebration and good fortune with the white and gold of Jewish holidays. Please take one with you as a keepsake of this Bat Mitzvah day.
We don't "applaud" speakers during the service - but we do encourage clapping to the rhythm of any sprightly song. This is a cheerful occasion in the "hassidic" tradition of joyfulness rather than solemnity and dreadful decorum.
At some points of the service, the congregation traditionally stands, especially in honor of the sacred Torah. Please rise when asked.
Other than that - enjoy!
